o.k, to keep a long convuluted story short....
had been really suffering with elbow pain, prescribed those morphine patch things, read instructions, 'don't take if pregnant' realised not had a period but ahd forgotten because of elbow, did test and i'm preggers!! only about 2 months so still early days but need advice guys and gals.....this was completely unplanned, had been using contraception as on methotrexate - imagine rheumy's reaction! as luck would have it, i'd had chest infection so hadn't taken mtx for about 1 month before i conceived. does anybody know of any research about mtx and pregnancy where mtx was stopped shortly before conception? everything i can find it was taken during and after conception.
also, they've taken me off all meds now but i'm dying with my elbow - has anybody successfully taken pain killers during pregnancy? again, research i can find is limited.
still waiting for apt with obstetrics - they don't seem in a rush to get me checked out and obviously we will no more after 1st scan. know higher risk of miscarriage cos of meds was taking (was on sulfasalaine and diclofenac at time)
its just been a very stange time and lots to get my head round. was told need elbow replacemnet urgently but obviously that will have to go on back burner too. we're really happy about the baby but sooo apprehensive too about how will cope. with aidan we were trying for over a year and doing everything by the book and now this one just pops up!!!!
oh any by the way shush - you're the first to know! but we made the decision to come on here becuase of the info and support we need.

Hi Katie,

I suppose its down to all sorts of things so its a matter of wait and see.

Sorry I cant be of much help but sure someone will pick up and respond to your post. Did your rheumy not recommend what drugs you could take for painkillers? Good luck on the scan and I promise I wont breathe a word...BigGrin

Cool

Oh Katie what MUST be reeling round in your mind right now!
I have no experience of this being a crinkly old prune but I do so want to say CONGRATULATIONS!
I'm sure you will get lots of advice on here and things will probably all just fall into place as your med people get to know and a plan is worked out with you all.
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

CONGRATULATIONS Katie!!!

Sorry I can't help re conception and mtx but it might be worth ringing the NRAS helpline, they may be able to get you information on painkillers in pregnancy too.
I hope you find the answers to all your questions, it must be an anxious time for you.
Wishing you a straightforward, problem free pregnancy!

Love, Doreen xx

Hi Katie,

Congratulations on your news, It must be a bit concerning for you but I'm sure all will be fine. Try a heat pad or a warm wheat bag for your elbow, I used to have a lot of problems with my elbow and using the fore mentioned I am fine now. I do hope all goes well for you and your RA settles down during that time. Take care Lorna x Smile

Wow! Congratulations from one expectant Mam to another!

TRY not to worry TOO greatly- I would ask the Obstetrician as they usually know about the effects of drugs. Also I think the rheumy should be able to tell you something of the risks entailed but to be honest it does happen and much of the time ALL is fine.

The scan will probably be the best option for you as it will show if it has affected baby. The fact you were off it for a month is good too although it is usually the *possible* damaged eggs form taking the MTX which can hurt a baby.

RE pain killers- I was told panadols only. I am sure there are other meds plus one CAN take Hydro, SLZ, Azothrioprine through out pregnancy, and low dose steroids but none of these are great. It may be that the RA suppresses itself anyway- so wait and see!

Will say a big prayer!

PS- What I suggested about the Obs- tell the GP you're expecting and that you have RA etc and what's happened and ask for a consultation with an Obs.

hi

i have known women who have had totally healthy babies on MTX- actually all the women I have known on mtx and fell prg by surprise who are RA patients.

I took paracetamol no probs when prg with bernice.

i tried to titrate the codeine down as much as poss. apparently 1 in 1000 babies are born addicted to the codeine (bernice was) but did well on withdrawl for 2 wks and I hardly had any! Mind you the gynea and obs team say that it is partly because I had had so much over the yrs.

i took steroids throughout post 12 wks as I had to stop the anti inflams. my obs and gynea team say up to 60mg a day for steroid post 12wks is ok.

you will have to take advice etc. but congratulations- a precious gift indeed.

Jenni xx

Congratulations!

I was on SLZ throughout my pregnancy with DS2, and I was lucky that my pregnancy supressed the RA throughout the pregnancy. In fact, I felt so good with so little pain at 4 weeks, that I knew to test lol!

Sorry, I know nowt about MTX and early pregnancy.

Hello Katie

Great to hear from you again. Gosh you are busy then if back at work and also moving house.

The NHS certainly has slowed down at the mo. My Doc also says that the NHS is in a bit
of a mess at the moment. I am also waiting for appointment to determine my next drug.

Keep well.

Hi Katie

Congratulations on your news! That is really wonderful. Hopefully once the hormones really kick in the RA will be supressed and things will settle down for you. As Lorna says wheat bags are great as a temporary measure so do try it!

Can't remember what I did drugwise when pregnant ... youngest is 16 today! Can't believe it is such a long time ago!!

Hope things go well with work, the house, the pregnancy and the RA. If you get chance keep us posted!! LOL

week 17 and all seems well touch wood. finally saw a consultant last week who was worse then useless, i knew more then he did! they'd done no research about methotrexate whatsoever and told me not to worry as wasn' taking it when conceived. but by time i got home there was a message from the midwife as they'd rung the drug info line and were asking me to come in the next day for an extra scan to check for spina bifida - i'd been asking for extra scans and checks all along and just been dismissed! gotta love the nhs! anyway, little one seems fine its just me nearing the brunt!! aidan's bringing all sorts home from nursery and i just seem to have a permanent cold and cough that wone shift! if one more person tells me i look tired....!! i look tired cos i am!!! but just keep thinking i'm almost half way through and i can stop work in jan which will help!

Hi Katie,

Good to hear that the midwife is on the ball now and I hope you get all the extra scans etc to put your mind at rest.
You must be finding it hard working and looking after your little one while you are pregnant, could your GP sign you off sick so that you can finish work earlier then January?
Hope you get rid of that cold soon and things get better for you.

Love, Doreen xx
